MEETING OF BOARD OF GOVERNORS. The Board of Governors of Canterbury College met yesterday. . Present—Mr T. i>. Weston (chairman), Bishop Julius, Dr. Chilton, Messrs H. J. Beswick, G. W. Russel, M.H.R., T. W. Adams, T. S. Poster, O. C. Corfe, John Deans, and! J. G: L. Scott. •■ Apologies were received from Bishop Grimes and I>r. 'Morley. The Chairman stated with regard to the Professorial Board's regulations respecting breakages at the School of Chemistry, that they provided for an appeal to tie Boawt of Governors by any person who feels aggrieved by the action, of the Professorial B,oard. The regulations were agreed to. Messrs Whitcombe and: Tombe were appointed booksellers to the College. The estimates for the year "ending December 31st, 1902, were considered. The estimated! receipts from the College for the period were £12,485 17s, and the expenditure £185 lls lid in excess of that amount. Included!' in the estimated expenditure, -was the item, "Balance* of cost of erection of, new ..electrical laboratory buildings, £2000." Several items showed eJdgibt increases. The estimated receipts from £he Girls' High School were £2264 6s 2d, and the expenditure £196 14s 8& - less than that amount. .The receipts from the Bays' High School, were estimated at £4842, and the expenditure £204 10a l<s»' than that amount. The Chairman stated that the estimates had been- considered - Htid passed by .the College Committee and by the Finance and Estates Committee* Th« estimates of the several departments J were taken separately, and were agreed, to.. \ A specification of the fittings for the alterations to the chemical laboratory- was read, the cost of the. same being given as , £150 10s. The Chairman considered it was regret-1 table that they-should" have to expend this amount in an old building. Mr Russell thought that the work' should have been submitted to tender instead of one firm being asked to supply a price. Dr. Chilton said , that it only An estimate: no undertaking had been entered ,into. He explained", that the amount of expenditure Had come as a surprise to him. . TJie matter was referred to the College Committee to report upon. The Chairman,said he had been in communication with the Premier with regard to R serve 2012, Cqidstream, being handed over to the College, ami' also the accrued -rents. Mr Seddon was unable to bring in a Bill this session, and' he (the chairman) intended seeing hdm on the matter when he next visited Christchurch, "with the view of urging upon him the desirability of bringing in the necessary legislation next year. The reserve in question was set apart for provincial higher education. It was decided to call for fresh applications for mathematics and physics mistress at the Girls' High School, at a safiry of £175 per ann>UTL The Board then adjourned.
