THE CITY FIRE BRIGADE AND THE SUBURBS.
DISCUSSION AT THE COUNCIL. At the City Council meeting last night the Fire Brigade Committee reported mat in accordance with .the resolution of the Council, the engines' would cease to attend fires outside* the city boundaries (except in Linwobd) on the 17t& October nest. ' Those persons who had given written - guarantees should be notified that tfaey v will not be held covered alter the .date menjfcionecS. CrV.Gray/in moving'the adoption of the" clause, pointed out that several of these private persons, who had. property scattered ootsid* *%». given; their personal guarantee* ,ets, to the fire engines going outside the city., ; It would be necessary, therefore, to let these people know the altered etate.of things...' He thought it was a great mistake,, and he, felt sure' that there would be a howl when one of these Jarge factories outside the city caught fire, and the engines could not, under the resolution of the. Council, go "outeide the belt " . ■ - Or. Jlaodonald said he desired to,move an amendment to tne first clauee. He thought they would be aiding and abetting wanton destruction of property, and, perhaps, loss, of lifeif they;prevented going out of the titty, gay,- to Addington or tt> Riccarton, when a large mill, or some of the stores- taught fire, He-ooneidered that it would be far.bettef to leave.the arrangement with individuals; who were willing to give a guarantee as to going, outside the city, with ijttS Fire Brigade Committee. '- They were able to <ieal, with the questions as to the distance the engines should go, and the amount to be paid. He' moved, ac an amendment —"That the arrangement •as- to guarantees with private individuate .be left in the hands of the. Fire Brigade Committee." ■ > • . Cr. Taylor seconded the amendment. Cr. Smith said he agreed with the amend-' ment of Cr. Macdonald, because the conduct of a body who had a plant capable of extinguishing fire refusing to go outside the city when valuable property, and perhaps life, might be in danger, would be highly •' reprehensible. He agreed, however, that " the notice ' should be given to the Borough Councils adjacent,- that the Council would not allowtheir engines to go outside the city.. But he did not think they should go.tbe lengibhof refusing to go to tfioee private individuals who might guarantee the amount which might be fixed. He, therefore, thought'that Cr- -MacdonakKe amendment'should come as a supplement to the reports Cr. Loughnan thought that the best way would be to strike out all reference to the guarantees of individuate in the clause, because what was being dealt with was the contribution of the boroughs towards the attendance of the Brigade at all fires therein. Cγ. Gray.s»id if the matter of private guarantees was "left in the hands of the Fire Brigade Committee, they would manage to come to' some satisfactory settlement of the question. '- . Cr. Macdonald withdrew his amendment, and the clause was carried with the omission of the words from "those" down,to Vmen-j tioned." ' ' ,3
