' The Engineer reported that neaiCy all the water-race cleaning ua,<l been completed. The Council decided $a purchase 24a }lr 36p of land ©ear the.sea-beach iat Waterton, and plant it, so that it may -be used lor picnic and other reopeation purposes. A letter was read' ijrom the Tinwald Town Board, stating that it was intended to apply under section 8 of the Public Works Acte Amendment Acts to have the cost of maintenance of Archibald street, Tinwald, whaoh was largely used for general traffic, apporjtioned. The Council decided that not recognise any responsibility in the matter. " i
On the motion of Mr FriedHaaader, it wa£ decided to invite offers for sale to the Couajcil of from 25 to 3Q acres of land near thjj .sea-beach, between W%kanui creek and the I Ashburton river.
A letter from Mr Dowling, complaining of the charge made by the Council for cleaning the water-race through Ms property, was referred to the Engineer to report. In repfiy to a letter from Mr Whdtholl, and sent by the Geraldine County Council, stating "that it was intended , to remove about 20 chains of the railway bridge over the south branch of the Rangitata river, the Council decided to make. application to. the Government for tbe timbs-r. for the purpose of constructing a Eight traffic bridge over the north branch, and to supplement the Government grant made to the same purpose. A special vote of thanks was accorded Mr Wright for forwarding to the Council a specimen of concrete pipes proposed to be used for fluming of the 60 chains of race damaged by the late floods. The Committee appointed to consider the petition, in connection with the alteration in the boundaries of the Anama and Rangitata Road Boards, reported that after careful investigation they found' that there were a number of names it'ttachied to the petition which should not have been there, and they recommended that the prayer of the petition could not 'be granted. Mr Stitt moved, and Mi* Morgan seconded—"That the report be adopted/ The CHadrman held that tba petition was in perfect order, and be trusted tbe report woxild be referred back to the Committee for further consideration. Mr Wright maintained that there were not sufficient names on the petition. Out of 25 ratepayers entitled to vote, there were only 13 names of those legally entitled to sign tbe .petition. Mr Friedlander suggested that the Committee might accept an amendment that th.3 petition be referred back to th-a petitioners, pointing but that it was not in accordance with the provisions of the Act. He moved, in that direction. Mr Harper seconded tbe amendtaent, which was Cost, and the report d the Committee was adopted. The Council than adjourned for a week.
