Newfoundland holds a special session of Parliament to renew the modus vivendi with France. The Right Hon. J. Chamberlain has invited the Premier to a conference in London on the matter.
DUBLIN MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
Despite Mr William O'Brien's and the Irish National League's virulent campaign, several loyalists have been, re-elected for the Dublin municipality. Mr John Clancy, an extreme anti-British , candidate, was rejected. EMBEZZLING CASHIER SENTENCED. (Received January 18th, 9.19 a.m.) NEW YORK, January 17. Alvord, cashier of the First National Bank, New York, who admitted embezzlements at that institution, has been sentenced to thirteen years' imprisonment. SUCCESSFUL MILITARY BALLOONISTS. BERLIN, January 17. Military balloonisfcs have successfully crossed from Berlin to Sweden. SPANISH DESERTERS PARDONED. MADRID, January 17. Sixteen thousand Spanish deserters during the war with America have been pardoned on the occasion of the marriage of the Princess of the Asturias, a member of the Royal family. FUNERAL OF THE LATE BISHOP UREIGHTON. LONDON, January 17. The Most Rev. Dr. Temple (Archbishop of Canterbury) conducted the service at the funeral of Dr. Creighton, late Bishop of London. The interment took place at St. Paul's, deceased being the first Bishop to be directly buried there. A TERRIBLE MISHAP. ROME, January 17. A quantity of anti-diphtheria serum at the Milan Institute became contaminated during preparation, and produced several deaths from lockjaw. Three hundred tubes were immediately withdrawn from the doctors. THE LONDON AND GLOBE FINANCE CORPORATION. (Received January 18th, 9.10 a.m.) LONDON, January 17. The reconstruction scheme of the London and Globe Finance Corporation proposes to raise a capital of two millions iv pound shares credited with fifteen shillings paid, with a further rive shillings psr share payable on allotment. The shareholders are offered a new share for each old one at present held.
