The AsMnirtonJßoroug'h. Council met on Monday evening. Councillors E. J. Paul (in the chair), Clark, H. Davis, H. M. Jones, B. "W. Andjjws, Timmins, and H. Willis. The chairms_i apologised for the
unavoidable absence of his Worship the Mayor, Councillors Scaly and Davison. He then reported that tihere was a credit balance at the Bank of £162 Us.
The Lighting 'Committee was asked to brin_- up a report with reference to ~a renewal of the contract with the Gas Company* for lighting the streets. The Fire Brigade Committee was asked to report on various matters, --including that of providing horses for the brigade plant in case of fires. It was resolved to request the medical men to report to tlie Council all cases of infectious diseases occurring within the' Borough. The question of the rate of wages paid to the Coimc-l's labour men was again brought up, and after considerable discussion a motion was carried raising the foreman's wag 6ss to £2 5s together with a cottage and.tha* of the other hands to 6s 6d per day, making an increase of 3s per week per man. It was further decided to grant them holidays with full pay on Christmas Day, New Year's Day. Good- Friday. Easter Monday. Queen's Birthday, and Prince of Wales'* Birthday. It was decided tc- proceed with the wotk of asphalticag the cycling track in the Domain, on receipt of the balance of £50 on behalf of the Athletic Association, and the signing o>f an approved guarantee for a further guarantee of £50 in twelve months. It was stated that u_e~only contract received for doing the work was one for £134 ss. and the Council had agreed to accept this and do the wodk as soon as the Association had deposited the £50 and given a guarantee for an additional £50.
