THE SCHOOLS' GATHERING—ATHLETICS AT LANCASTER PARK —"BANJO" PATERSON—EASTWARD HO!—THE ANNEXATION CRUISE—THE PAPER FOR THE MAIL.
This week's "Weekly Press" will be issued to-day in time to catoh the outgoing San Francisco mail. The number presents that character for excellence which makes the journal so popular, and the engravings of events which have occurred in different parts of ths colony provide it with exceptional attractions for distant friends. There are sevesi further pictures of New Zealand's annexation of the Cook Islands, with descriptive letterpress, several views of the Victoria Racing Liub's Spring Meeting, and the similar meeting of the Wellington Racing Club, nine engravings with continued descriptive account of Mr T. Pringle's visit to Japan, a country most interesting at the present juncture. There are also several pictures of the Carterton Racing Club's Spring Meeting, and two pages of representative New Zealand birds. There is a great number of engravings of a more local character, such as the hoisting of the flag at New Brighton and East Oxford, the annual gathering of the Pioneer Bicycle and Amateur Athletic Club at Lancaster Park, Mr "Banjo" Paterson with the Christchurch Polo Club, and three views' of tlie first competitive display at Lancaster Park of the North Canterbury Public Schools Athletic Association, and twenty-seven other pictures interesting as records er mementoes, besides the usual careful selection and collation of attractive reading and news matter.
