CANTERBURY WAR FUND.
This fund has been established for the purpose of increasing tho military assistance to be sent by New Zealand to South Africa. Subscriptions will be received by the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr W. Recce), The following sums have been subscribed up to the present: — Amounts previously acknowledged £1591 15s, Dr. Brittin £1 Is, F. Storey £2 2s, &co. McClatchie £25, P. and D. Duncan, Ltd. £50, R. Shanks £3 3s, E. Speechley £2, F. G. Horrell £5, J. G. Davis £5, J. Mitchell ss, S. Gregg 2s 6d, E. Gregg 2s 6d, C. Atkinson 2s 6d, B. 1). Dawson 2s 6d, W. G, Gardiner 2s, W. Gibb's 2s 6d, F. Dunning Is, W.E.C. Is, Mrs E. D. O'Rorke £20, John Studholme (Merivale) £100, Allan Hopkins £5. . . A deputation from the Amateur Athletic Association, consisting of Dr. Jennings and Mr J. F. Grierson, waited on the Mayor yesterday and made a proposal to hold an athletic gathering on a large scale :n which all the clubs could participate, the proceeds to be given to the Transvaal War Fund. His Worship expressed his pleasure at the offer, and a circular has been issued to the various clubs, calling a meeting of the various athletic and cycling clubs, etc. ? to consider a proposal to'ihold a monster Athletic, Cycling, and Sports Carnival, in Lancaster Park. The meeting will be held ab 8 p.m., to-morrow, at tjie City Council Chamber, when the Mayor will preside. It is to be hoped that all the various athletic organisations will be represented on the occasion.
