. HIS HORSE KILLED. . (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELBCHAM.) WELLINGTON, December 28. One of the horses for the Contingent, startled at a sudden noisej ran against a telegraph pole, breaking its neck. Trooper Valentine, of Hawera, was thrown, and broke some qf the ; ;bones in one of his hands. Privates W. C&uston, A. E. Loach and < D. McKecbnie, Geraldine Rifles, have been called to Wellington to be tested for the second New 2fea!and Contingent for the Transvaal. Clouston is a fine stamp of a young New Zealander, and he and McKechnie are well known on the football field in South Canterbury. McKeelinie for some years was a member of the Dunedin Highlanders, and is spoken of as a goad shot. He is also an excellent piper. The three men left Geraldin& on Thursday evening for Wellington, and were given a hearty sendoff by their comrades.
