BOARD OF GOVERNORS.

The Canterbury College Board of Governors met yesterday. Present—Messrs H. R. Webb (Chairman), G. G. Stead, A. E. G. Rhodes, J. L. Scott, T. W. Adams, J. Jack«on, H. B. Kirk, C. S. Howard, W. Cbrystall, G. W. .Russell, Hons. E. C. J. Stevens and W. Montgomery, the Bishop of Christchiirch, Revs. Canou Harper, W. Morley, and Gordon Webster. An "apology was received from Mr Westenra.

The Chairman reported that the first payment of £200 from the Gammack estate had been paid over to the circulating depart-, ment of the Public Library. ■ The Board went into Committee to consider the report of the Estates and Finance Committee dealing. with matters affecting reserves, &c. The recommendations of the Committee were adopted. Leave of absence was granted to the Hong. E. C. J. Stevens and W. Montgomery during the session. Mr O. W. Russell gave notice of the following motions for next meeting }of the Board—"That a return be prepared and laid on the table at the next ordinary meeting of the Board .showing the expenditure in detail under the heading of incidental expenses as follows: —Incidental expenses for the year 1897—School of Art £5168 2s 9d, Boys' High School £478 3s 7d, School of Engineering £152 3s 9d, College maintenance £514 10s 7d, chemical laboratory £104 19s 9d, Biological library £87 19s 7d, telescope £67 13s 9d, Girls' High School £171 2s, Public Library £145 6s sd, Museum £171 9s 8d; total £2061 10? 5d." Also "That in view of the fact'that; in 1891 the attendance of students at Canterbury College was 349 and has steadily decreased to 217 in 1897, it is desirable that a special Committee be set ap to enquire into the working of the College,', especially (a) as to the causes of- the. falling off in the attendance, (b) whether the efficiency of the College, as an educational institution can be increased, (c) whether it Is desirable that any.changes should be made in chairs, or new chairs set iup, in order to bring the College abreast, of .modern requirements,* (d). as to the emoluments now attaching to the chairs. Such Committee to consist of members, to have power to call for persons and papers, and take evidence either py cor-, respondence or orally, and to report within three months."

The Board then adjourned.
