THE FROZEN MEAT TRADE.
(from our special correspondent.)
WELLINGTON, June 10.
In his latest letter to' the Agent-General, Mr H. C. Cameron, Inspector of Produce, says:—" I had no intention of again reverting to the furgent need there is for New Zealand producers to bestir themselves to ensure improvement of the means of distributing their meat, but I think it advisable, to show the energy with which the River Plate is being pushed, to draw your attention to the annual report of Messrs Jas. Nelson and Co., in which it is stated that the directors have been giving their careful attention to increasing the number of their retail shops, so as to render the Company more independent of the wholesale markets, and have pleasure in stating that during the past four months the trading shows a much better result than in the corresponding period of last year." Mr Cameron points out that he has persistently advocated the opening of a few tirat class shops in districts where the New Zealand meat is not known. The objection to such a scheme has been that it would not pay. " When, however," he concludes, " we find a firm ot such experience as Jas. Nelson and Sons increasing their retail shops so as to render themselves independent of the wholesale market, it is a strong proof that the shops would pay interest on the working expenses and interest on the capital invested, and a grand advertisement for New Zealand meat would be obtained free of coat to the producers."
