THE VOLUNTEERS.

The E Battery held" their annual smoke concert in their orderly room last night, when there was a full attendance of the corps; Lieutenant Cowlishaw was in the chair. There were numerous visitors present, amongst them being Major Day, Captain and-Adjutant Hobday, the Rev. W. S. Bean, Captains Dougall and Charlewood, ex-Lieutenant Harris, Lieutenants Smith and Neave,, ex-Quarter-Master Sergeant Fox. The Chairman presented the Martin Cup to Sergeant Symes, who commanded the gunnery detachment. Spoons were presented to Gunners Munns and Oppenheim for highest scores in spoon matches; certificates of qualification for gunnery badges to ex-Gunner (now Sergeant) Johnston and to Gunners A. G. Munns, F. Kruge and A. G. Oppenheim; and crops to Sergeant Oppenheim, for 100 yards and 220 yards .foot races at the Battery camp, and to Gunner Dunn for the wheel and boot races also at the camp. A silver cake 1 basket was presented to Quarter-master Sergeant Taylor, who is leaving the Battery after fourteen years of service. The toasts of the evening included " The Queen," " Officer commanding the district," "Mounted and ordnanoe corps," " North Canterbury Rifle Battalion," "E Battery," .''Non-commissioned Officers of the district staff," "Rangetaker Haropp," and ■■ Ex-members of the JSattery." Songa and recitations were given by Sergeants Colclough and Beardsley, ex-Sergeant-Major Duncan, ex-Bombardier G. H. Mason, Corporal Lezard, Rangefinder Burns, and Gunners W. G. Turner and Wilson. Sapper Lester, of the Christchurch Engineers, secured fourth position in the championship at the New Zealand Rifle Association meeting at Oamaru. His comrades assembled at the Railway station last night, and gave him three hearty cheers on his arrival. They then accompanied him to the orderly room,'where his health was enthusiastically drunk. The Canterbury Engineers paraded last night, when there was a muster roll of fifty. Captain Dougall -was .in cotnmand. The men were exercised in infantry drilL Two new members were elected.

The annual meeting of the Kaiapoi Rifles is announced-to be held at 7.30 p.m. on March 25th.

The annual meeting of the Non-Commis-sioned Officers' Club will be held to-night.
