THE TAILORING TRADE.

The Christchurch Tailoring Trade Union has submitted a statement of prices and conditions of labour to the employers of labour, to which they ask for an answer in a specified time. . The conditions are—(l) The hours of labour not to be more than forty-eight per week ; work to be done between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on the first five days, and 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday. (2) All overtime from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. to be paid time and a quarter, double time after 11 p.m. to be paid for the first five days, after 1 on Saturdays to 6 p.m. time and a quarter; after 6 p.m. time and a half; on holidays 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. time and a quarter; after 5 p.m. double time. (3). Not more than two weekly hands to be employed' in each shop, two males or two females, or one male and one female, provided machinists, pressers and persons kept for Tepairs and alterations are not affected. (4). Wages for weekly, hands to be—males, minimum £2 lbs per week, fe males £1 12s 6d. (5). The proportion of apprentices to be one t*i four men, or fraction of the first four. Fpr the first four tailoresses or pressers, or fraction of the first four, one apprentice.' and so on in the same proportion. (6) Male apprentices to be bound five years and female apprentices three years. (7) Wages of apprentices—Male 2s 6d, Sfj, 7s 6d, 103,12s 6d, 15s, 17s 6d, 20s, 25s and 30s per week during the respective halfyears. (8) Female apprentices, 29 6d, fis, 7s 6d, 10s, 15s and 20s. (9) A fair distriba. tinn to be made of work in each workshop. (10) , Union members to be employed in preference to non-membera, (11) All work to be done on the workshop premises of th*. employers.
