LIEUTENANT JAMES ROSS.
Lieutenant Ross, who fills the second place, is one of the beat known and most popular of the regular attendants at the Association meetings, hie appearance on the platform at the preeentatioa of prizes Aieing always hailed with: great acclamation. He has foaght many a hard battle on the Association ranges, and is the permanent holder of the Carbine Champion Belt, having won it three times, viz., In 1884, 1886 and 1888. Up to the present Boss has never been classed as well up among the 700 yards shots of the colony, and it is at this distance that he has previously failed. He was one of the selected ones outside the top scorers to. represent New Zealand •in the Federal Match at Oaraaru in 1896, and his score at 700 yards was the lowest on hie eide, viz., 19 with ten shots. Looking at hia work this year, he baa evidently improved With age.
