PRIVATE J. McGREGOR, (Queen's Rifles, Oamsru).
Private McGregor, the winner of the ehftmv pionship, first came prominently into notice as a rifle shot in the year 1896, when he did splendid work at the Otago District Meet* ing, at which meeting he secured the championship. At the Association meeting held In Oamaru in 1896 he fired as a member of the Oamaru Rifle Club, for, which club be had previously been doing good work on the range. From the start of that meeting he and his club mate Rule went to the iront, and it was not till the Grand Aggregate Match that they vacated their position. In the memorable Champion Match, of that year Rule and Wakelin started level, while .McGregW was only two points behind them. McGregor made a big bid for the championship, and bat for a miss with his last shot must have eeoured the coveted honour. Aa it was he tied with Rule for aecontl place, but lost it in the fire off. During that year McGregor attended the New South Wales Association meeting, where he and Pareona (Hon. Reserves) represented this colony. MoGregoV did fairly well at the great Australian meeting. Owing to pressure of business be was not able to attend tho'Association meeting in Auckland last year, and up till withina few weeks, back was undecided whether. his business engagements would permit of his shooting at the present meeting... .".-.'•■ . ~.- .■■..,,■ : '.:'-.
