PICNICS.

O'Brien and Co.'s" boot factory went down to New Brighton j by an early tram on Saturday morning, j and proceeded to the New Brighton Gardens, where the day was pleasantly spent in games and sports of various kinds. Music i was supplied by a band. I The first picnic held by tbe Brickyards' employees took place on Saturday last at Tai Tapu, in a paddock kindly lent by Mr j H. W. Peryrnan. The party left town ' shortly after nine o'clock in four-horse drags supplied by the Tram Company, Mr Peryman's place being reached at eleven o'clock. Sports for children and adults were carried on with great success by Messrs J. Simpson, Taylor (2), M. Mclnernay, E. Piper, C. H. Harding, J. Young, J. Kingdon and B. Pegley. Soon after 5 p.m. a start was made for town, the picknickers giving cheers for Mr Peryman, and on arrival in town they gave cheers for Messrs H. B. Kirk, Wigram Bros., and J. Brightling. The children of the M'Kenzie school, at Cheviot, met in the Domain for their annual, treat. During the afternoon there were sixteen children's races, for which prizes amounting to two guineas were given. The Committee, teachers and friends did their best to make the afternoon enjoyable, refreshments in abundance being provided for the children and visitors. In consequence of the inclemency of the weather in the. evening, the concert had to be postponed until Tuesday next.
