THE VOLUNTEERS.
The City Rifles had a squad down for practice at Bromley on Saturday, amongst them being Lieut. Hawdon, Colour-Sergeant Bean, and Sergeant Jackson. Firing with Kynoch -ammunition at 300, 500, and 600 yards, Sergeant Jackson put up the magnificent score of 94, which is a record for the Bromley range. The totals were 28 at 300 yards, 34 at 500 yards, and 32 at 600 yards. Colour-Sergeant Bean rang on the possible at 500 yards. A shooting team of the N Battery journey to Port Chalmers to-morrow, to fire a match against the Port Chalmers Navals. The fourth competition for the CaptainPalairet Champion Bait, in connection with the Mounted Rifles, was held at the Bromley range on Saturday last. The scores :— Corporal Wheeler, 200 yds 25, 300 yds 23, 500vds 26—76; Trooper Tasker 25, 21, 28— 74 ;" Sergeant-Major Berland 26, 25, 22—73; Corporal Ashton 24, 21, 26—71; Trooper Bidder 30, 20, 13 —63 ; Trooper Scrimshaw 26, 15, 18—59; Sergeant Macartney 22, 17, 19—58 ; Lieutenant Neave 18, 21, 9—48 ; Sergeant Herriok 21, 24, 0—45; Trooper Betteridge 14, 10,15—39; Barrett 19,-11, 9—39; Trooper Chapman 17, 10, 9—36 ; Trooper Quaife 19, 7, 10—36.
