IMPROVED LOCOMOTIVES.

The l-iocomotive Department are improving the type of engines on the main line, two more of the U class, built at Addiugton, having (pays the Otago pai'y Times) arrived In Dunedin last week. They are similar to the U engines received about twelve months ago, but have several valuable improvements in the regulators, the water gauge columns, &c and, as was expected, their running is giving complete satisfaction. It is interesting to note that while these are the most modern type of engine on the line, there is also to be seen at the locomotive shed the first engine used for- express work on the Dunedin-Christchnrch line. It is a small and insignificant thiug compared with the large and powerful engines of the U class.
