AUSTRALIAN.

Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. THE POPULATION OF AUSTRALASIA.

Sydney, March 6. At the end of last year the popula tion of the seven colonies of Australasia was 8,809,985.

MR SEDDON.

Mr Seddon is among the passengers of the Mararoa, which sailed to-day. Mr Seddon has enquired into the question of the carriage of produce between Australia and England. He found the freights on all descriptions of goods considerably cheaper than those charged on vessels trading to New Zealand, and that the cheapest rates were those charged by the French and German steamship lines. He also enquired the cost of working the mints in Victoria and New South Wales, and obtained a fund of information in the event of such an institution ever being required for New Zealand. A large number of New Zealanders gave Mr Seddon a cordial send-off.
