CANTERBURY MOUNTED RIFLES.
The annual meeting of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles was held in the orderly room last night, when there was a large attendance; Captain Snow presided. In the report the Captain congratulated the corps on its position, and stated that fifty" .three men had qualified for capitation. He expressed regret at the resignation of Lieutenant Slater. After he had left, the" corps fell to pieces; but it was now ones more in a satisfactory state. A camp of instruction had been held at the Show Grounds in October, which had been an unbounded success, on account of which hi had determined, with Major Slater's help, to work up the corps to its full strength. He was glad to see that great improvement had been made in the shooting in shield matches. He hoped that next year the leaders of con* tingents would be able to take their corps. He was giving a bag with shooting requisites to be fired for by men who had not fired in this season. The firing would take place on M»rch 6th, and April 10th, ranges 2Qoydß, ZOOyds, arid 600 yds. The balance-sheet showed as follows:—Receipts £154 13e 7d, the whole of which, with the exception of a small balance, had been expended. Including the capitation the whole available cash for 1897-8 was £152 10s 6d. The balance of assets over liabilities was -0281 7s. The report arid balanoe-sheet were adopted aa read. The following officers were elected:-—Secretetfy, Sergnant Crosby; Finance Committee. Ser-geant-Major Borland, Quartermaster-Ser-geant Webber, Lance-Corporala Anderson and Macartney, Trooper Herrick ; Shooting Committee, Sergeant-Major Borland, Qnar-termaster-Sergearit Webber, Lance-Gorporal Anderson, Corporal Baily, Troopers Ashton and Wheeler; Assistant Storekeeper, LanceCorporal McDowall; Coach, Trooper Ashton; Auditor, Corporal Bradley j Delegates to Associated Corps, Sergeant-Major Beriand, Quartermaster-Sergeant Webber and Trooper Ashton; Eandicappers, Major Slater and Captain Palaire.; As-iataafc Treasurer, Corporal Lloyd. It was resolved, on the motion of Captain Snow, that a trophy value £3 3s should be given toSorgeant-Major Beriand for his services to tho corps. Votes of thanks to the retiring officers and Major Slater were passed. In reply Major Slater congratulated the corps on its smart appearance and good muster. He was very,glad to see the recognition they had made of the services of Sergeant-Major Borland, wfeona whom he spoke of as the best man who had ever worked for Mounted Rifles. A vote of thanks was also passed to Captain Palairet for the handsome challenge belt he had presented. Captain Snow presented to Trooper Ashton a photograph on behalf of the Queen's Cadets. The meeting then terminated. Immediately afterwards the annual smoke concert was held, a number of visitors being present. During the evening items were given by Captain Cresewe-v Sergeant-Major Beriand, Major Slater, Sergeant Kropp, Mr Irwin, Troopers Bidder. Harper, Tubman and others.
