AMATEUR ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION.
A meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was held at the City Hotel last night. Present—Messrs J. F. S- ne ?2S. (Canterbury), in tlie chair. C Hood-Williams (Aahhurton), P. Selig (Hawke's Ray), J. G. Hawkes (Wanganui), J. B. Lanrenson (Nelson), J. W. H. Wood (Auckland), Thomas Kerr (Dunedin), F. S. Harley and C. F. Smith (Taranaki), J. H. Hempton (Wellington), B. P. Gully (Nelson), W. Garrard and J. Lawrence (West Coast), D. Wood (Canterbury), C. Clark (Wellington), H. Frost (To Awamatu), W. C. H. Wigley (Timaru), and L. W. Harley, Hon. Secretary (Wellington). An apology for absence was received from Dr. Thomas.
Correspondence was dealt with :—From Hon. Secretary Dunedin Amateur Athletio Club, enclosing the necessary certificate for McCormick's hammer-throw of 110 ft 6in, being the record throw for Australasia. The record was passed. From Mr Speight, Auckland, stating that tho gate privileges for the sports had been sold for £270. Received. From Mr B. J. Esam, Auokland, stating that the total receipts for the Auckland sports had been £381, and the expenses £291, leaving a profit of £90 after paying f or cap g an{ -- badges. Received. From the local officer, Auckland, endorsing the application of the Cambridge Athletic Club for permission to include amateur events in their programme of March 17th. Granted. From the honorary Secretary Greymouth Amateur Athletic Club, offering to pay tho expenses of three Chmtchurch athletes to attend the Greymouth meeting on Easter Monday. The Club was referred to rulo 18, section 1, which prevented any amateur from taking expenses for Club meetings. From Mr Basil Fergii-son, Wanganui, asking the Association to pass the following standards : —100 Yards, A. H. Holder, 10_seo; 120 Yards Hurdles, A. H. Holder, 16seo; Three-mile Walk, F. H. Creamer, 23min Isec; 250 Yards Flat, A. H. Holder, 26_sec; Pole Jump, James To Pa 10ft 6Jin, Hori Ewera 10ft 6iin, H. L. Kingsley 10ft 3in, C. O. Laurie 10ft 3in; 440 Yards Hurdles, A. H. Holder, 58£ sec. The standards wore passed. From the Gisborne Amateur Athletic Club, stating that two of their members had broken their amateur status. It was resolved to ask for full particulars. From Mr A. Vickerman, Greymouth, advising that the Greymouth Amateur Athletic Club had f ranted a permit for the Hospital sports. Ir Vickerman's action was endorsed. From the honorary Secretary Ressington Athletio Club, Hawke's Bay, stating that an Athletio Club had been formed in the district, and asking for permission to include two amateur events in their programme, the prizes in each not to exceed £10 in value. The matter was referred to the Hawke's Bay Club, with special reference to the value of prizes allowed in amateur events. George Murdooh, on the application of the Honorary Secretary of the Victoria Amateur Athletic Club, was re-instated. Mr J. F. Gribrson read a report of the visit of tho delegates to tho championship meeting at Auokland. It mentioned the world's record for the 440 yds Hurdles, gained by A. H. Holder, in 58|seo. The delegates had been most hospitably entertained by the northerners. The Chairman mentioned that in Auokland the habit of betting was undermining all amateur sport. Mr C Hood-Williams moved, and Mr P. Selig seconded—" That it having been reported to the Association that betting was rife at the recent Auckland meeting. the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association calls on the Auckland and North Shore Clubs to take steps to put down betting at any future meeting, and that their special attention be called to rule 16, atao to section B, sub-aeotion 1, rule 18."
The motion was carried unanimously. The meeting terminated with a vote oi thanks to the Chairman for his report.
