Dr. Thomas Burnes, formerly of Auckland and Dunedin, who has just resigned th< charge of the Porirua Asylum, nas been presented by the staff with an inkstand and opera glasses, and by the residents in the district with an illuminated address and purse of sovereigns.
The cable steamer Terranora laid twenty miles of the new cable across Cook Strait yesterday. Mr W. F. Downeß, late manager of the Wanganui branoh of the Bank of New South Wales, died on Wednesday. r He had been in failing health for some time past. The Magisterial enquiry into the loss of the barque Grassmere has been adjonrned till Wednesday. DUNEDIN, January 3. Captain Ewan, late of the Wakatipu, b*s been appointed to the Harbour Board's tag Plucky.
