ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

On Tuesday morning, at about twelve o'clock, a horse attached to a butober'a cart, while being driven across the • asphalt crossing in front of Mr Fountain Barber's, Cashol street, stumbled and fell to the ground. On examination, it was found that one of the horse's fore legs was broken. Tho assistance of Mr W. G. Garrard waa obtained, and the horae was shot. The unfortunate owner of the horse was Mr Charles Alps, butcher. This is the second accident of the same nature that has occurred at this crossing within a few days. "Messrs J. Shankland and P. Prichard were bathiDg in the Ashley river two days ago f when the former sank in deep water, and the latter went to his assistance. Shankland clutched Prichard by the neck, and both were nearly drowned, till others, who were in the party, went to the rescue. It waa some time before thoy recovered Mt Prichard, who was unconscious for about » quarter of an hour through his exertions, although he is a fair swimmer, and on a previous oooaslon saved a life from drowning.

(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAMS.) AUCKLAND, December 24. A sad boating accident occurred at Henderson's Valley, by whioh a resident named H. W. Woodward and his wife, who were married three months ago, were drowned in the creek. The deoeased'a brothers, on visiting the house yesterday, found the place deserted, and subsequently discovered the body of Woodward lying near the bank, and bis wife in deep water some distance off. It is believed that MrWoodward got out of her depth, and her husband, in diving to resoue her, waa stunned by striking hie head against a Bu»x, and was drowned. Woodward waa 39 years of age, and his wife 27. WELLINGTON, December 25. A sad fatal acoident happened atParra» matta, sixteen miles from town, at an early / hour this morning. A young girl, named ,;', Jane Connell, aged eighteen, had arrived from Wanganui, where her parents reside, and left by the midnight train to visit friends at Pahautanui, whioh ißsome dis« tance from the railway station. On reaching the Parramatta station she saw her uncle on the platform, and cried -'Wait, uncle.*' Unfortunately the girl did not. wait for the train to stop and, in attempting to alight, fell! under the train, several carriages passing over her head, whioh was smashed into pulp, and one arm was almost severed from her body. DUNEDIN, Deoember 24. James Donald was found dead in his bed' room at the Crown Hotel to-day. Ha ia ■apposed to have died from heart disease.
