CULVERDEN ANNUAL SHEEP FAIR.

a —-"■ The annual sheep fair ab Culverden was held yesterday in fine hot weather. A large number of dealers, farmers and others arrived by the train with the auctioneers, as v/ell as by other means of conveyance. All the principal City auctioneers were lepresented, and the yards presented a very busy appearance. The entry included 60,000 sheep, which were represented in sample pens in many instances, the larger flocks being rounded up on the adjoining open country. The laigest proportion of the entry were merino sheep, and nearly all the adjoining stations were represented, from the Clarence and Kaikoura. An excellent lunch was served by Mr Moffat, of Culverden Hotel. Mb Pyne was the first auctioneer to break the ice, offering a line of 880 large framed sound merino ewes bred by Mr Bullen of Green Hills, for which the bidding went up to 4s Bd, as against 2si9d at the Kaikoura sale. Bidding for sr time was somewhat slow, but improved as the sale proceeded. The top pi ice for merino dwes was got by Mr Tabart at 5s 10s. The sales were nob concluded when the train left ab 4.30 p.m., Messrs Matson and Co., F. C. Tabart, and Miles and Co. being unfinished. The prices to the time of our dispatch leaving were showing a decline of about 2s 6d per head compared with the last annual sale. The Parnassus merino ewes, which sold last year at 8s lid, were sold yesterday at 4s 7d. The following are details :— Nkw Zealand Land Association (Mr F. N. Robinson auctioneer), on account of Mr Edgar Jones, 550 culled merino ewe 3at Is 5d ; on account of St. Helens, 350 culled merino wethers at Is sd, 683 sound-mouthed ewes at 3s 9d, 530 two-tooth halfbreds at 7s 6d; on account McArthur Bros., St. James's station, 1000 halfbred two-tooths at 93 IOd; on account St. Helens, 1450 sound-mouthed merino wethers at Is 6d. Messrs Miles and Co., Limited (per Mr F. A. Archer, auctioneer), on account Mr A. W. Rutherford, 1000 two-tooth crossbreds at lis 2d, 300 do at lis 2d ; on account of Parnassus, 1800 merino ewes at 4s 7d, 1100 do do at 4s 2d, 200 do culls at 3s 3d. Messrs Pyne and Co. sold on account Messrs F. and G. F. Bullen, Greenhills, 1050 four-tooth merino ewes ab 5* 2d, 3550 full mouth merino ewes at 4s Bd. On account of Mr A. W/Clark, Clarence river, 850 four-tooth merino ewes at 4s Bd, 510 six and eight-tooth ewes at 4b lid, 700 five-year-old ewes at 3s 3d. On account Balmoral Estate, 650 merino ewe* at 5s Id. WrJ. T. Ford sold on account of Mount Palm Station, 1600 two-tooth first cross wethers at lis 7d, 600 two-tooth first cross mixed ewes at lis 7d, 1000 four and sixtooth merino wethers at ss. Mb F. C. Tababt sold on account of Highfield station, 3700 merino ewes ab 5s 6d, 5s 9d, and 5s lOd, 350 do culls at 3s lid ; on account of Tekoa, 125 crossbred lambs at 5s 3d, 1048 merino ewes at 5s 7d; on account of St. Leonard's station, 360 crossbred ewes at 9s 2d, 200 two and tourtooth ewes at 10s 9d, 759 merino ewes at 2s 6d to 2s 9d ; on account of Mr Forrester, 530 crossbred ewes at 5s 6d. Mr E. G. Staveley (associated with the ' National Mortgage and Agency Company) sold on account of Achray station, 500 twotooth halfbred ewes at lis to lis Bd, 300 eight-tooth halfbred ewes at 9s 3d, 730 do at 8s IOd; on account Kaiwarra station, 1300 merino ewes at 53 6d. Messrs Matson and Co. sold on account of Leslie Hills, 600 sound-mouthed merino ewe* at 4s 9d ; on account oi Glyn Wye, 547 merino ewes ab os lid to 4s lid.
