MEETING AT PHILLIPSTOWN.
An adjourned meeting of electors was held in the schoolroom, Phillipstown, last evening, to receive the report of the Committee appointed at a previous meeting to take steps to obtain the services of gentlemen willing to serve on the licensing Committee. There was a fair attendance, and tbe Mayor of Linwood presided. The Committee reported that from various causes it had beea somewhat difficult to obtain the voluntary services of many gentlemen whom they believed would meet with the favour of the electors. They had, however, been successful in getting five gentlemen from the several parts of the district who hod expressed their willingness to be nominated, and their names would be submitted for approval. They were Messrs J. T. Smith, ■I. N. Horsley, W. Ensom, and I. H. Pentecost, Linwood; and Thomas Burgan, Ohoka and Swannanoa. The report was approved. Messrs W. Crolle and Joseph Taylor were nominated at the meeting, and the Committee were authorised to endeavour to obtain a candidate from Woolston or
New Brighton. After some discussion the meeting terminated.
A contest over tbe election for Licensing Committee for Ashley is likely to take place after all. Candidates in the prohibition interest have been submitted to the temperance societies and approved, and thero will probably be three or four moderate candidates put forward. The Rev. L. M. Isitt gave the concluding lecture of a series on prohibition and the temperance question at the Kaiapoi Oddfellows' hall on Thursday evening. Tiie Mayor occupied the chair, and there was a very Urge attendance. No charge was made for admission. Although the candidates for prohibition were announced for the Kaiapoi district in these columns a week ago, the moderate party has nob been able to decide upon a "list of names. Nearly everyone who has any experience of the Licensing Acts has declined to act. A final meeting to select candidates, it is said, will be held either to-day or on Monday, when the list of names will be furnished to the Press. (PRESS ASSOCIATION telegrams.) AUCKLAND, March 9.
