THE WILSON RIVER GOLD REEFS.
A correspondent sends us the following : — "By the mail wh:ch has just arrived at Invercatgi'l from Preservation Inlet, most encouraging particulars have been received respecting these new reefs, that were discovered last October, but owing to their being surrounded with dense bush, with no track or means to get to them without encountering great difficulties, as they are situated some six miles from the Inlet, very little has as yet been done to open them out. But these difficulties have now been nearly overcome by the Government having employed a iarge number of men to construct a road from Cromarty, the new township in the Inlet. This road will lead direct on to these reefs and is now nearly finished, when it, will give every facility for stores and machinery to be conveyed on to the new workings. A considerable township is already springing up at Cromarty. A'o less than five stores aud an hotel are now in course of construction, and many other buildings are rapidly going up. Every section of this new township which the Governme.it otfored for sale some months back was eagerly purchased by people who intend at once building ou these plots, as those who know this district are assured it, will shortly become a large
mining centre. Tiie proapeators' claim is looking richer than ever, but if it only tun:s out as rich as reported on by the Government Inspector, who crushed oat of a small quantity of stone gold equal to-360z to the ton, it will do. The reef has also been struck both to the north and south of them carryiuggoo.l gold all through the stone, particuiurly to die souih. Other claims will shortly be opened in this direction, when it is expected some grand result 3 will be obtained. Rich specimens have recently been pinked iip on the beach, but the reef they have come from has not yet been found.
All that ie wanted to develops this goldfield is a little capital, which, unfortunately for many of tue present elaun'nolders, they are sadly in want of, as most of them are diggers whose means are very limited.
