ENTERTAINMENTS AND SOCIAL - GATHERINGS.
A social gatheriug in connection with the Avonside parish was he'd last night in the schoolroom of the Holy Triuity Church. It was well attended, and was in aid of the lighting and sealing fiiud. A pianoforte duet was nicely given by the Misses Wright, songs by Mis Bingham, Mr Bingham, and Miss Shand, and a recitation by Mr J. A. H. Marciel. His Lordship the Bishop, who was also present, a brief address, iv which he referred to religious progress in England, and urged the unity of the Church here. Iv the course of the evening refreshments, which were very much appreciated, were handed round by the ladies.
The quadrille assembly attached to the Christchurch Working Men's Club held a fancy dress ball in the Recreation Hall last night. It was attended by some fifty couples, many of whom were in picturesque costumes, and all enjoyed themselves.
The monthly meeting of the Lincoln Temperance Society was held ou Tuesday, when the following programme was gone through:—Song by Mrs D. Dunn ; duet by Misses M. and E. Topham; violin solo by Mr W. Dunn, which was deservedly encored ; reading by Messrs J. Kennedy, J. Muir, W. Ksunedy ana A. MeMeekan; recitations by Louisa Thomas and Miss R.
Major. A dialogue wa3 given by two little girls, Mary Bevvy and Lacy Tod, also one uy five girls, Misses A. Beuny, G. Restall, E. Wright, A. Beuny and L. Gordon.
The fortnightly meeting of the Anchor Lodge, U.A.0.D., was held in the Lodge room on Wednesday last, A.D. Bro. Bergman in the Chair. Bro. Beil gave in the report of the Gala delegates, and stated that the Gala was well under way and promised to be a great success. P.D.P. Bro. J. C. Hobson gave a full and concise account of the business done at the District Grand Lodge annual meeting. A very hearty vote of thanks was given to Bro. Hobson.
The first meeting of the Church of England Temperance Society was held in St. Michael's schoolroom last evening. The Rev. Fitz Gerald opeue i the meeting with a short address. Songs and recitations were given by Misses Rowley, Miss Hawley, J. Scdneider, T. Pike, Miss Smith, and a dialogue by six little girls brought a very successful evening to a close.
The monthly meeting of the Coalgate Band of Hope was held on Monr ay. Recitations were given by Masters W. Rollenson and W. Beech, Misses F. Webb, A. Everett, A. Langdaie, A. Rollenaon, H. Kollenaon, and E. Beech, dialogues by Master A. Rollenson and W. Rollenson, Misses Beech, Rollenson, and Milne, readings by Mus R. Hodgson and Mrs Beech. Mrs Beech presided at the organ.
On Tuesday evening, under the auspices of the Sons and Daughters of Temperance, Kaiapoi, an entertainment was given in the Oddfellows' Hall of that town by a number of competitprs for prize books, which urere won as falljg/B: — Dialogue, boys under ten, J)tocteif¥aieent 1, Gtorge Lambert 2 ; singing, "girls under ten, Cissy Byron 1, Mary Lathaa2; recitation, girls under ten, Sarah Christie 1, S. Bardon and F. Richards 2 (equit) ; singing, boys under fourteen, H. 1, A. Baker 2 ; recitation, girls under fourteen, Annie Christie 1, Emma Lambert 2; singing, girls under fourteen, Colina Bsrreit 1, Bella Simpson 2; recitation, boys uoderfourteen, B. Hendy 1, T. Baroon 2. There were a number of entries in each competition. Many of the selections were well gi'Veo,- and the judges in some cases had aofte difficulty in making the awards. The entertainment closed with an accordion solo, which, oat of six entriee, was won by Defcnis Murphy, Edward Giles second. Mr R. Evans ptefeided, and the prizes, over the valns of £5, 'were distributed by Mr G. H.
