COURTENAY ROAD BOARD.
A meeting of this Board was held on Tuesday, September Bth met. Present—Messrs T. H. Anson (Chairman), J. Gough, H. A. Knight, J. Dysart, "C. Rudd, T. Needham and G. Watson. Tenders for the different wwks advertised were opened, and those of D. Murphy at 5s 6d and M. Burke at Is 9d for formation and reforming, D. Murphy at ll£d and C. McCausland at Is Id per cubic yard for metalling, were accepted. In accordance with notice of motion given at last meeting by Mr C. Rudd, it was resolved that the Surveyor's salary be reduced by JJ2Q per annum. Correspondence was read— From the Selwyn County Council, covering copies of resolutions passed at a meeting of suburban Road Boards held at Christchurch on August 22nd last. Resolved—" That this Board agrees to the proposal that the Council should be asked to define main roads, but objects strongly to any unequal allocation of subsidies; also that it be a recommendation to the Council from this Board that before taking any stepe in the direction of further rating for maintenance of main roads, they should refer the question to the Boards interested. From the Resident Engineer for Canterbury Railways, stating that a certificate in accordance with the Public Works Act Amendment Act, 1889, is being prepared for the Commissioners' signature with regard to the transfer of parts of Railway reserve between Kirwee and Hawkins' stations as roads to the Board. From the Springs Road Board, declining to pay half the cost of desired crossing over the South railway line between Burnham and Norwood. From W. H. Beere on the same subject. Clerk to forward correspondence in connection with the matter to the Selwyn County Council, and request their assistance, as the expenditure required is partly in the Courtenay district and partly in the Springs road district. From E. Smith and others, re crossing over the water-race above Darfield. Clerk to inform them that the Council having already granted them permission to make the crossing the Board do not see their way to make any suggestion to the Council on the subject. From Rev. H. Collins, applying for the use of the large room at the office for the purposes of a sewing bee in connection with St. George's Church on Wednesday afternoons. Granted. From A. Jane and others, applying for an open, crossing across Holland's road, and for permission to make a water-race along the unformed portion of same fronting Rural Section 15024. Resolved— That the Board grant permission for the open crossing, but refuse to allow the water to be taken down the road. From R. Johnson, applying for an open crossing across Kirwee from R.S. 15977 to R.S. 15976. The Clerk to see him on the subject and report. From D. McPherson, requesting his name may be removed from the roll on account of Reserve 1751 resumed by tbe Council for planting purposes. From G. Gunn and R. Munro, asking that the names of P. Morrison and H. Wells may be put on the roll in place of theirs for certain sections. Granted. Resolved—That the Board continue to purchase small birds at 6d per dozen as at present until November 2nd next; also that tenders be invited for different works for next meeting of the Board. Sundry small accounts having been passed for payment, the Board adjourned till Tuesday, October 13th next.
