[Br Telegraph.] "from our correspondent.] REEFTON, September 2. | The following are the battery returns for the past week : — Keep-it-Dark—326ozof amalgam for 175 tons. Globe—l77oz amalgam for 175 tons. Venus Extended—2o4oz amalgam, from 90 tons. Fiery Cross Extended—ls9oz amalgam from 97 tons, Just in Time —The manager reports:— " There is no change in the mine, only the reef is looking better this week, being now 6ft in some parts of the stops, and gold to be seen in the stone. The crushing will be finished to morrow morning, and we will set at once and clean up, and let you know the returns a3 soon as we can." —Thos. Nayssiith. Happy Valley—The manager reports having sunk 4ft during the week, and that the reef is 4ft wide, and carries the stone, yielding a nice prospect on being crushed. He will next week send in specimens for the Melbourne Exhibition. Venus Extended—The manager reports that 74 tons was sent to the mill for the week. The long-looked for north block has been met with in the stopes, and is expected to te cut in a day or two on the level. la the No. 6 stope the reef has now been driven on 34ft, the stone averaging ISin. The stone shows fair gold, llxere is l>o change on the stopes. S-otia—The mine nruiager reports' that he is still driving north on the the reef maintained a thickness of 20iu. New Era—Fair progress is now being made in the tunnel, which is now in good reefing country. Fiery Cross Extended—The arrangements for the merging of this Company in the Hopeful Extended are now m progress, and the necessary formal work will be completed very shortly. The mine shows well, the reef in the stopes being from Bft to 9ft wide. It is expected that the main level is being extended south to connect with the Just-in-Time, and the boundary will be reached in the course of a few weeks. South Hopeful—The operations here furnish nothing for report. The manager, with one man, is engaged in taking out a small run of stone. Lone Star—Driving is being continued in an intermediate level on a fair body of stone. It is proposed to connect the mine with the Just-in-Time battery by an aerial tramway, so as to take out the stone as far as yet proved. The length of the tramway will be about sixty chains. Inglewood—About 13ft remain to be risen to connect with the old workings above. When this is done the mine will be ready to send out stone. Keep-it-Dark—The figures for tbe last monthly cleaning up were 4200z 15dwt of jold from 614 tons. Ihe mine looks well for a long and prosperous career. Nil Desperandum—The battery was only running two and a half day 3 this week, so ,here was no scraping of the plates to-day. L'he cause of the interruption was a small andslip into the race. Number Two South Keep-it-Dark— Stoping is still going on, the reef keeping x> about the average width, as given in "ormer reports. There is a talk of a srushing taking place next month. &ir Francis Drake—Tenders close tonorrow for the construction of a tramway Lnd paddock, also for the supply of the retired bricks for setting the steam boiler, ["here is no change in the appearance of he mine. Big Eiver Extended—The crushing is concluded, and the mine manager is exacted in town this evening with the gold iad hie monthly report. In the meantime lobody seems to know anything very lefinite how matters stand. Mr Fenton, director of the School of iJines here, has returned after a prolonged 'isit to the Westport School of Mines, ehere he has been lecturing and awakenog an interest in the School. He resumes da classes in the School here to-morrow, ad is stirring up his pupils to renewed nergy. Mr Gow, of the Mines Departaent, is here, superintending the collection f mineral exhibits for transmission to lelbourne. He has got the work well inder way.
