An ordinary meeting was held on January 6th. Present—the Chairman and nil the members. The C erk's report was considered, and the following correspondence was read—From the Government, that no more rates will be paid after 31st March on Crown and Native lands. From Selwyn County Council desiring to be informed if this Board is willing that the drains in this district shall be placed under the control of the Council, especially as regards the river Halswell. It was resolved that in reply to the above this Board is desirous that the Council may assume control of the river Halswell only, leaving the minor drains under the control of the Board. From same, enclosing copy of a letter written by Mr Ivey quoting figures tending to prove that water from races does not affect lowlying lands in this or other districts. It was resolved that with all due de&rence to Mr Ivey's professional knowledge of the subject referred to, this Board retain the opinion already formed from practical experience, that the waterraces artificially made seriously affect the low-lvius districts. From Mr Herlihy, ob ice ting that any money should be deoited to his river contract by reason of labor employed by the Board thereon, as the weeds taken out have accumulatedfrom the contracts immediately above his. The Clerk was instructed to sue for all rates outstanding after February Ist. It was resolved that the attention of the Halswell Road Board be called to the quantity of weedr, flowing from the part of the river under the control of that body. After passing accounts for payment the Board aeljourned.
