IN VERCARGILL, Novomber o. A young man, named Herbert Anderson, got a month's hard labor, without tbe option of a line, for an unprovoked assault on a country visitor. The defendant is on bail awaiting trial at the Supreme Court for robbery with violence. Complaints have recently been made of the annoyance to passengers in trains through tlie use of obscene language. To-day the Magistrate made an example in the. case of Thomas Walsh, who got four weeks for striking a guard, and behaving iv a violent manner; and was fined 40s, with £3 ls costs, for using obscene language. Tbe house of T. McNalty was burned down this morning. The furniture was insured for £100, and the house for £200, both in the New Zealand office.
A petition is in course of circulation in the Western District asking the member for Wallace to oppose Mr Seddon's Gold Duty Abolition Bill, that duty being one of the main sources of revenue in mining districts of the electorate.
