BOROUGH COUNCILS.
RANGIORA. The usual monthly meeting of the Rangiora Borough Council was held on Friday evening. Present—The Mayor (Mr H. Boyd), Crs. Blackett, Cone, Galliver, Manning, Good, Jenningi. A letter was received from the Public Works Department, respecting the erection of a post and telegraph office for Rangiora, and stating that at present the Government could not see its way to enlarge the building. With respect to the drainage scheme, tne Works Committee suggested that the following plan be adopted, viz. That the depression on the western boundary of Mr Smith’s property be banked up, and the storm water going formerly through his land be thus diverted across tho Oxford road down to eastern side of the belt to Parnell’s ford; thence through Mr Luxton's, Dr Downes’, and the Yen. Archdeacon Dudley's properties into Northbrook Creek in Church street. This work will necessitate four bridges, viz., one wooden across the Oxford road, and another acrosß White street, and one concrete bridge across Church street, and another across King street. The Committee recommended that the lastnamed one be commenced at once. Toey suggested that all the creeks in connection with this scheme be cleaned out thoroughly. Mr C. Luxton wrote informing the C.ouncil that as one gentleman intended to ask compensation for land taken for the drain, he woull expect to receive compensation for his land. A good deal of discussion ensued, aßd eventually it was decided to adopt the Work Committee’s report. Mr G. H. N. Helmore was appointed solicitor to the Council. The financial statement showed that £57 Is 7d had been received during the month. The Dr balance at the bank was stated at £165 10s 7d. Accounts were passed for payment amounting to £B6 10a 3d. It was pointed out that a resolution of tbe Council with reference to the refund of moneys paid by the burgesses towards cost of footpath was inoperative, and it was decided to rescind the same. The rates of the Literary Institute were remitted. It was decided to give notice to persons having neglected Uve fences to trim the same. Cr. Luxton said that a meeting of persons interested in a water scheme had been held, when it was decided to ask the Borough Council to join with the Mandeville and Rangiora Road Board in calling a public meeting to discuss the question. It was resolved that the meeting be called. The Mayor called the attention of the Council to a suggestion made some time ago that a Hospital should be established in Rangiora, and he referred to the Immigration Barracks as a suitable building for the purpose. Several Councillors spoke in favor of the proposal, and it was resolved to call a public meeting to discuss the matter. Attention was called to a person slaughtering animals in the borough without a license. Tt was decided to draw the notice of the police to the matter. Cr. Cone movad the resolution standing in his name with reference to granting the use of the Council Chamber to local Committees. After a considerable amount of discussion the motion was lost.
