BOROUGH COUNCIL.
KAIAPUI. Tuesday, December 17. An ordinary meeting of this Council was held this evening. Present — The Mayor, Crs Oram, Hall, Fairweather, Parnham, Blackwell, M'Donald, and Westoa. The following correspondence was read :— To the commanding officer of No. 5, C.R.Y., and to his Honor the Superintendent stating that Mr J. C. Porter had been, appointed fire inspector. The balance sheet showed the receipts to be from bridge rent, £21 2s; rates, £9 4s 3d. The overdrawn balance was £52 Oa 7d.
The Town Clerk said that Mr Porter had informed him he had received no official ip-
timation of his appointment by the Mayor to be fire inspector.
The Mayor stated the flre brigade were asked to recommend an inspector ; a deputation waited upon Mr Porter, who consented to act, and he was recorauieuih'd t>y the brigade. He (the m.iyor) theu made the appointment, nnd if the notice wjis inserted in the '• Gazette " that was euough ; Mr Porter was d>i)y appointed.
Cr Parsham broutrht up the report of the fire prevention committee, which was to form the reply to a letter from the secretary of the insurance association, asking the amount of the annual expenditure lor the maintenance of the tire brigade. The committee calculated it to be £S2 4a 6il, after taking into account the outlay up to the present. That stim would be haruly sufficient to keep up the efficieicy of the brigade. After a slight discussion npnn the estimates of the committee Cr HALL moved, Cγ Fairweather seconded— •* That the report be received and the contents thereof be sent to the secretary of the insurance association." Carried.
Cr Parn'HAM, chairman of the works committee, reported that the works in Cuss street and Raven quay, ordered to be carried out, had been completed. The foreman had been engaged clearing various Btreets. The committee had not beea able to inspect the bridge, hut there were some matters which they had to see to, and the contractor could be paid .on their certificate being given, if the amount due was passed. - Cγ Blackwell moved, Cr Weston seconded—" That the report be. received." Carried..
Cγ Hall moved, Cr McDonald seconded —" That the following accounts be paid, viz. —T. Yeysey (carting), .£2 Is 6d ; G. F. Hewlings (auditor), £1 Is; J. Matthews (auditor), £1 Is ; J. Harper (foreman), £3 16s lid; J. Jones (toll collector) £4 10s ;. petty cash, £5." Carried. Cγ Paenham moved, Cr Faibweaxher seconded—" That J. Bowmaker's contract for bridge repairs, £40, be paid on the certificate of the works committee that the work is completed." Carried. Cγ Paenham dre*v attention to the necessity for repairs to a culvert in Fuller street; the Council had the timber, the foreman and another could do the work, and the cost would not exceed £2.
Or Blackwell moved, Cr Hall seconded —"That the culvert in Fuller street be repaired under the supervision of the public works committee." Carried.
In reference to painting the bridge as well as making repairs to a suspension rod, it was decided that the works committee report thereon at next meeting.
The Clerk having been offered £1 for a pump and length of pipiug, now useless, at the corner of Black street, the offer was accepted on the motion of Cγ Weston, seconded by Cr Parnham, Cγ Oram dissenting. The Council then adjourned.
