LYTTELTON.
Tuesday, December 17, 1872. Present—His Worship the Mayor and all the councillors. The minutes of the last meeting were road and confirmed. The following correspondence was then read and considered :— From Mr Huddlestone, relative to the rating of the town. From Mr Sheath, respecting drain pipes ; and from Mr J. Kerr, custodian of the bath-ing-shed, and its appliances ; this latter was first discussed, and left to the works committee.
Applications were received for petroleum licenses from the undermentioned parties — viz., Messrs Sedcole, Fyfe, Forbes, and Bunker.
With regard to this matter it was moved by Cγ Graham, and seconded by Cr Chalmers, and carried, that the inspector visit the premises of those applicants for the sale and storage of petroleum, and leport.
Mr Huddlestone's letter was next considered at length, and it was moved by Cr Ellisdon, seconded by Cr Rouse, and carried, that the Council cannot comply with Mr Huddlestone's request, and that fresh tenders be called for, the Clerk to prepare the necessary advertisements. ; The report of the foreman of works was then read. ! Complaints had been made with reference to the inefficient state of the l'fe buoye at the bathing shed, and it was decided that they be repaired forthwith. The weekly pay sheet, amounting to £8 Is was read, and passed, It was moved by Cr Rouse, and seconded by Cr Kenneb—" That the sum of £i be expended in prizes for the Borough and £1 for the Catholic schools." Cr Grange moved as an amendment— " That the sura of £2 be put to the recreation fund, and the balance to be expended in prizes."
The motion was seconded by Cγ Webb. The amendment was lost. Moved by Cγ Chalmebs, seconded by Cγ Grange, and carried—" That the pomp over the well in Oxford street be and, if available, placed in position at the mouth of the tunnel." His Worship the Mayoe stated, in eulogistic terms, the reception he had received from his Excellency the Governor.
A long discussion took place with reference to the chance of Lyttelton obtaining , from the Government compensation for the loss of water frontage.
A resolution emanating from, and standing in the name of his Worship the Mayor, was rescinded, and it was proposed by Cγ Geasge, seconded by Cr Gkaham, and carried— " That a committee be appointed, Consisting of his Worship the Mayor, Cγ Rouse, and Cr Chalmers, to be intituled the vigilance committee, and that Or Rouse be chairman of the same.
The Council then adjourned.
