LONDON.
October 10. The Pan-Anglican Synod in session at Lambeth has adopted and issued an address condemning rationalism, popery, and mariolatry, and seeking to promote unity in the church. A despatch from Aden announces that pioneer steamers of the expedition for the release of the British captives held by King Theodorus of Abyssinia have sailed from that port for the Abyssinian coast.
Reports say it is the intention of Earl Derby soon to resign the Premiership, but they are not generally credited. It is rumoured that the Queen will confer the honour of knighthood on some of the leading colonists in connection with the visit of the Duke of Edinburgh to Australia. Victor Emanuel has made an appeal to the great Powers of Europe against the provisions of the September Treaty, which bind the Italian Government not to permit any infraction of the temporal dominion of the Pope.
The "Times" says that the Hon. Edward Thornton, the present envoy of Great Britain at Rio de Janeiro, will be appointed ambassador to the United States, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Sir Frederick Bruce.
