MOTOR CYCLE INTOLERANCE

Sir, —A rumour has reached me that certain Edgecumbe residents have been complaining about motQr cyclists travelling up and down the district roads, and about the noise they make. Now lam intimately associated with most of the motor cycle owners of the district and, to my knowledge, almost all of their cycles are fitted with all the equipment (including mufflers) that are required by law. The people who make the complaints are motor car owners, and will tolerate a car going past for weeks with a faulty muffler or ho muffler at all. There is no notice taken of motor cars starting up or travelling past at all hours of the night. But let a motor cycle start up and move off going through its four gears before it attains its normal smooth going, a howl is put up and complaints are put in to the Traffic Department. This despite the fact that the motor Cyclist has complied with all the requirements of the law and is only going about his normal business. Yours etc., R.R.R.M. Edgecumbe, August 22.
