PLEASED WITH SETTING UP OF COMMITTEE

Local body personnel in Whakatane have expressed pleasure at the setting up of a committee to decide on a site for"a Bay of Plenty harbour. The chairman of the Whakatane Harbour Board, Mr W. R. Boon, stated that he was pleased the Government had agreed to the representations he had made as’ one of the members of the Whakatane Harbour Board’s deputation to Wellington last June. It would be remembered, he continued, that at the meeting convened by Federated Farmers at Rotorua last year, Whakatane had suggested that a committee be set up to decide, having regard to all Bay of Plenty, Taupo and Rotorua interests and also from an engineering point of view, the best location for the establishment of a port for the Bay of Plenty.

Pleasure that the Government had acceded to the request of the local committee to consider the location of the port for the Bay of Plenty, was also expressed by the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry. He stated that the Government had been asked to do so in pursuance of the pre-viously-stated policy that the port should go where it would best serve the Bay of Plenty.

The committee announced was a strong one in his opinion, consisting of independent men who would give the question consideration. All Whakatane wanted was that the pros and cons of its claims should be weighed against those of Tauranga.

“I feel sure that everybody concerned will accept the decision of the appointed,” he concluded. •

Fair To Both Districts “The decision to set up a committee is a reasonable one which should be quite fair to both Tauranga and Whakatane,” was the opinion expressed by Mr J. L. Burnett, chairman of the Whakatane County Council. “Whatever the result of the committee’s inquiry,” he continued, “I would not like to see any ill-feel-ing arise between the two towns and feel sure that it will not do so.” Whakatane had always had happy relations with Tauranga and he hoped that the happy relationship would continue. s
