WELCOME HOME

FUNCTION AT KUTARERE

At. the Kutarere Meetinghouse on. September 16, Sgt., John Ruff wast given a hearty "Welcome Home" by the Maori residents of Kutarere. The function was organised by local members of the Whakatohea tribe and enjoyable music was supplied by Mr J. Te Papa's band. Mr T. Hape carried out the duties of M.C. in a very capable manner. Several Maori residents made speeches of welcome in traditional Maori style, while Mr Wells; chairman of the Kutarere Welcome Home Committee also spoke. Sgt. Ruff briefly but suitably replied. Following on an enjoyable supper, Mr Wells made the presentation of a generous sum of money on behalf of the Whakatohea tribe, and Kutarere Maoris. Mr Wells said he" was conscious of the honour extended to him—a Pakeha —in being asked to make the presentation and after referring in eulogistic terms to the guest, of. honour, handed the roll of notes to Mrs Haupal to give to Sgt. Ruff. Sgt. Ruff briefly thanked every one for the unexpected but very enjoyable evening and the handsome present. Dancing continued till the evening closed..
