MURUPARA CEMETERY
*+ TRUSTEES APPOINTED QUESTION OF SUITABLE SITE Writing the Whakatane County Council the Medical Officer of Health, Gisljorne, stated that he understood that the council found difficulty in obtaining persons to act as trustees of the cemetery and in consequence Inspector Wallwork was requested to assist to obtain the necessary personnel. The inspector now advised that Messrs Cawte, Murrel, Newton and J. Wilson who reside at Murupara have signified their willingness to act as.trustees, and the council was asked to approve the nominated persons and make application to have them gazetted. Inspector Wall work also advised that i-he council objected to the present ■site on account of the cost of construction and maintenance of the roadway giving access to the properly, and it was suggested thai-if land of a mere suitable nature can be obtained, the council should make application to have the restrictions on the present site lifted, when the matter can then be taken up with the Lands and Survey Department with a view to obtaining a more suitable site. The Finance Committee recommended that the council ask the authorities to make a more suitable site available and that Cr Cawte be consulted on question of situation. Cr Cawte reported that hC: had been over the area with the inspector and had agreed to a suitable site.

In addition Mr Honeyfield has advised that in the event of an emergency necessiating the same arrangements are completed whereby a special train with provisions would leave Auckland, trucks of fodostuffs being detached at various stations. He emphasised the wisdom of people growing their own vegetables, as apart from the possibility of supplies being disorganised or cut olf through enemy action, a future scarcity of vegetables is more than lirobable.
An enquiry Avas received by the town organisation from the County E.P.S. respecting the provision being made by the Borough organisation to supplj' foodstuffs in an emergency to County residents who normally draw their food supplies from the Borough. It was decided to notify the County Committee that in the event of local rationing being imposed and arising from an emergency that those County residents normally obtaining food supplies from Whakatane stores and evidenced by registration under the Government rationing scheme, will, for this purpose, .be supplied in the same manner as the Borough residents.
