FARMERS' UNION

ANNUAL MEETING

GATHERING AT EDGECUMBE Mr J. Mullins, presided at the animal meeting of the Rangitaiki Plains Branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union which took place at Edgecumbe. The president's report read as under: — In presenting my annual report I desire first of all to thank all these who have contributed in any way to the conducting of the branch's activities during the past year. The business of the branch included the following: Dental Clinic at E'dgecumbc; Truck impressment; County Council matters; Pig levy; Co-opera-tive marketing of pig meats;, Transport; Manure rationing; Rural Mail delivery restrictions. You are no doubt also aware of the experiment conducted by our Auckland Provincial Executive with the Dehydration of Meat, and they nre also still pressing for the removal- of the additional unjust bleeding' of the producer of real wealth by legislation, compelling him to adopt market in the place of already accepted standard values of livestock on your taxation returns. The territorial aspect of the war has steadily grown worse, bringing the danger nearer to our shores consequently the needs of the country must come first, nevertheless, when we realise that wo are still receiving the same price for our produce as was deemed insufficient over three years ago, by an independant commission set up for the specific purpose of recommending a fair price, and we read of Arbitration Court Award advances, ultimately inevitably increasing our production costs still further, the necessity for unity must be apparent to all, if the farmer is to receive in the fu,< lure a fair net return for services rendered in comparison with other sections of the community. The election of officers resulted: — President: Mr J. '"Mullins; Vice-pre-sidents: Messrs J. Hammond, R. Dunning; Secretary-Treasurer: Mr T. E. Briggs; Executive CommitteeMessrs R. John, E. .T. Bell, W. Ley, ,T. Neilsen. L. Christa'.l, together with president, viee-prcsidents and secretary.
