WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

WAIMANA MEETING

The monthly meeting of the Wai-» mana-Nultuhou Women's Institute was held last Wednesday afternoon in the Waimana Hall. Mrs Hewitt presided over a fair attendance of members. The singing of the Institute song opened the meeting. The minutes of the previous meeting wera read and correspondence dealt with* Mrs Hewitt thanked all who helped on Federation day, especially Mrs Eagle who had made the posies fo*' presentation and Miss Walton foe arranging an item by some of her dancing pupils, and those who supplied the morning tea.

An invitation was received from the Whakatane Institute for some of the members to attend their birthday celebrations on Tuesday next.

Mr J. Cain made a donation of £l towards the soldiers' Christmas cakes, which the Institute is sending overseas. It was decided to hold a novelty dance next Thursday evening for soldiers' comforts. A bring and buy stall will be organised asi(i produce, plants, etc. will be most acceptable.

A collection for the Leper fund resulted in £1 16s being received, a table centre, made and donated by Mrs Sims, for a competition for In-, stitute funds, realised close on 10s, Mrs Eagle being the winner.

Mrs Black gave a very full report on the Federation meeting which cvas held at Waimana last week. The report was written by Mlrs Gallagher, but owing to illness was unable to attend the meeting. The roll call 'Spring Gleaning Hints," was well responded to.

The Golden Thread was given by Mrs F. Savage, the reading was rather humorous and much enjoyed.

Mrs C. Wylde read interesting papers on the Elmpress of Japan, Ellen Wilkinson and Chiang Kai Sliek.

A competition guessing the length of a piece of wool, was won by Mrs G. Mitchell. The competitions for the day were: Best flower, Mrs Stevenson 1, Mrs M. Wardlaw 2, Mrs F. Bell 3. Best vegetable, Mirs Gill antlers 1, Mrs F. Bell 2, Mrs King 3* Rock cakes, Mrs Hewitt 1, Mrs Gil* landers 2, Mrs H. Wardlaw 3. 21b preserving jar of shrubs arranged for effect, Mrs T. W. Wardlaw 1, Mrs Mitchell 2, Mrs F. Bell 3.

The judges were Mrs Curtam and Mrs H. Bell, the president thanking them and also the hostesses who sup* plied a most enjoyable afternoon tea. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
