Mr and Mrs Fred Maxwell, of Auckland, spent the week-end as the guests of Mr and Mrs W. F. Ward. Mr M. Chittenden spent the weekend in Auckland returning to-day accompanied by Mrs ChittendenThey are to take up" residence in King Street. At Friday's meeting of the Whakatane Harbour Board leave of absence was granted Captain C. H. Brebner, who has acted as consulting engineer to the Board in the past. At Friday's meeting of the Harbour Board members expressed regret that the chairman, Mr J. W. Sumner, was seriously ill and it was decided to write a letter of sympathy to him. Mr W. Ri. Boon occupied the chair at the meeting in the absence of Mr Sumner.
The crew of a trawler had been so successful in shooting up German dive-bombers that an officer was sent from the War Office to ask the skipper for a detailed report on his methods. Here, according to Lord Mottistone who told the story as a true erne at a meeting, is what the skippep-SSk! him: "I call out, 'George!' and George says, 'Ay, ay, sir.' Then I say, 'Aero* plane reported, George.' George says 'Ay, ay, sir.' Then I say, 'Shoot the blighter.' He says, 'Ay, ay, sir.* And then George shoots him."
