SEA SCOUTS!
WHY NOT IN WHAKATANE
COMMISSIONER'S PLEA.
One of the strongest points made by Commissioner Hector Christie, in the course of his address to* businessmen yesterday was his plea for the formation of a patrol of seascouts in Whakatane. There were only 534 sea scouts in the Dominion, he said, which reflected rather drastically upon our sea-mindedness. In these islands he considered every centre which bordered the sea should have its own patrol. I't did not mean if a boy joined such a group that he was definitely setting out for a naval or mercantile marine calling. The boys simply learned how to explore, map and discover their own immediate coastline, and to love the rivers, bays and reaches in the vicinity. All his training was based on the same code of the land scouts. He hoped that Whdkatane would give the question serious consideration and in the event of an application coming forward he thought he could possibly arrange for finance for the first boat which would be the property of the patrol.
