EXPERIENCE GAINED
COAST SIGNALLERS AT WORK
With a chain of coastal stations operating between Opotiki and Tauranga, the Signalling Division ol the Bay of Plenty Home Guard held a most useful practice last Thursday night. Signal stations were established at Opotiki, Whakafane, Matata, Maketu, Papamoa Hills, and fauranga. The messages were trans-mitted.-by means of morse lamps. Poor visibility to some extent marred the practice, a haze being over the Papamoa Hills and along the coast. Nevertheless some invaluable experience was gained in the sending and receiving of messages. The stations were in operation from 7.30 to 11.30 p.m. The men, who were well prepared with thermos flasks and warm clothing, thoroughly enjoyed the work, and were most enthusiastic. This practice is the forerunner of many others, which it is intended to hold at intervals. Arrangements are also in hand to establish signal communication, with area headquarters fit Rotorua. This method could then be used in case of emergency If telephonic communication fails.
