A GREAT RESPONSE
SUPPORT FOR RED CROSS
REGENT THEATRE FILLED TO
CAPACITY
Although repeated calls have been made on the pockets of the Whakatanc people for patriotic purposes of all descriptions lately, and on each occasion have not been made in vain, the town's and district's generous public once more rose to the occasion by giving full support £o the Red Gross event on Wednesday night. This effort was made' by Group 2 in the Society's campaign, Mrs J. Grapp's committee.
The Regent Theatre was 'packed to the doors for the screening of "My Love Came Back" the film be- * ing an excellent one which was fully appreciated by the large audience.
The lobby of the theatre had, been attractively decorated bj[ members of the Red Gross Society and provided a novelty for the theatre-goers
During the*interval Mr Wish Winn, who acted as Master of Ceremonies, called on Dr E. T. Dawson to address the audience, and in doing so the Doctor thanked all for the excellent support given the Society.
A diversion which caused much amusement was provided when Horace the Horse, followed closely byBimbo the Clown, entered the: theatre and provided a variety of antics. This coincided with Mr A. J. Cianning's appearance at the microphone to conduct the auction of some livestock, Mr Canning taking over from Mr Harry Tennant, who had acted as announcer. While the auction was taking place Mrs' 'Aggit and infant entered the threatre and thrust her way to the "mike" being; desirous of selling her offspring.
Altogether the effort was most successful and reflected credit on all concerned and in particular Mr M. Chittenden, manager of the theatre, who had by untiring efforts all arrangements well at hand. Mrs Grapp's group will benefit by a considerable sum. Campaign to Conclude The conclusion of the Society's campaign draws near and to wintlup the actvities a Grand Dance is being organised to take place in the Winter Show Hall on September 24. The ladies intend making this thes event of the year and extensive preparations are ensuing. During the evening an, announcement was made that Mrs McLean had won first prize in uthe groceries competition and Mrs H. H. Armstrong the second prize.
