OHOPE POPULATION DECLINES

FOR the past five years, an overflow for the growing population of Whakatane, Ohope, residential and foremost ( beach resort in the Bay of. Plenty, is registering a steady decline in population. Since the New Year no less than 20 families have left and taken up their residence in town. The result is to»be seen in the growing number of vacant cottages and the deserted nature of the beach during the week. The main cause of the exodus is the number of new houses being built in Whakatane, plus also the increasing percentage of houses becoming vacant as a result of the Military Service ballots. Six months ago it was; estimated that Ohope .carried a permanent population of four hundred. To-day the number would be nearer half.
