PREPARATION OF ROLLS
VOTING IN MAY
The loeiil boilics in this district are preparing for the elections which will be held on May 14. Work is proceeding on the preparation of
the electoral rolls, AVhich close on January 31, but electors who have not registered may be included in the supplementary roll, which will not close until April l(i, four weeks before the election.
Purging Rolls
The Whakatane Borough Council electoral roll is being purged and notices have been forwarded to those people on the 1938 list who lost their qualification to vote because of failure to j.50 to the poll. Similar action is being taken by the Whakatane County Council. Non-Voters. In many cases, those who failed to vote last election have been added to the hew roll at their own request, but many have already left the district. Electors with rcsiclental qualifications who recorded thenverdict in 1938 are automatically included in the new roll now 'a course of preparation. Inspection of Rolls. All electors who wish to make certain of their qualification to vote would be wise to inspcct the electoral rolls to see that their , names are included. Some arc entitled to cast a vote in both the borough and county elections, although the giealcr majority have only one vote, in their respective area. Voters on Rolls. In the 1938 local body elections the Whakatane; Borough roll contained 1165 names, while the Whakatane County list will this number about 1750 ratepayers. There are nine ridings in the county. It is likely that there will be some additions to the supplementary roll of the borough, because the population has increased, although there have also been a number of departures. Qualifications Necessary. In addition to residential, other qualifications which entitle a person to vote in the municipal elections are rating, freehold and property rights. In the Whakatane County ratepayers are the only ones entitled to vote. Constant Alterations. Alterations in these respects to the electoral 1011 are constantly Being made by the borough and county staffs, which are automatically advised of many changcs of address through the post office. All people leaving the district should notify the proper authorities. The names of electors whose deaths have occurred are deleted from the rolls.
