HEADS AND PA

COUNTY FAVOURS TRANSFER i MATTER HELD OVER A recommendation of the finance committee that the transfer of the Pa and the area at the AVhakatane Heads to the AVhakatane Borough Council be viewed favourably was before the Whakatanc County Council at its meeting on Tuesday. Generally the council favoured the transfer but it was decided to delay a decision. The borough wrote saying that ac n meeting it had been resolved to petition the Governor-General to include within the borough the AVh<ire-o-Toroa Pa, and. the residential sections at The Heads.

Both of these areas were severed geographically from the remainder of the county and it was considered that they had everything in common with the Whakatanc borough. That the community interest on these areas is linked with the borough was evidenced by the fact that the council had already reticulated the Pa area with electricity, and it had been agreed by the council and the power board that the borough council could most conveniently supply and service the Heads area. The centennial park at the river heads will be under the jurisdiction of the borough council and the residents could not l°°k elsewhere than to the borough for services.

Cr W. A. McCracken said he viewed tlie recommendation favourably, ,and he thought the area should belong to the borough. Ihe Pa should be better controlled than it was, and the borough were the people to do it. The residents would ba better served though there might be an increase in the rates. Cr J. L. Burnett agreed with this from the health point of view. COUNTY PROMISES. Cr C. MeCready said Cr W. Held had made certain promises on behalf of the council which should be honoured. Cr Burnett said the promises would be on record and the council Avould honour them. c Geographically the Pa and Heads areas were essentially part of the borough < said Cr L. W. Luxtort. When the borough sewerage scheme was put in it would be necessary to include the Heads area.

Cr Burnett suggested that the recommendation of the committee should be held over. Tt might be desirable to discuss the matter with a committee of the borough council.
