RUBBISH DUMP

HEALTH DEPARTMENT'S REQUIREMENTS ACCURACY OF PRESS REPORTS The Whakatane Borough Council at its meeting on Monday night again discussed the conditions laid down for the use of a portion of the mudflats as a rubbish dump, the subject coming up when a letter from the Health Department was read, setting out the minimum requirements for the dump as the crushing of large tins and tanks, and the covering of the dump with spoil. A letter was also received from the Whakataoie Harbour Board stating that it had decided that the borough could use the area on the mudflats, provided it complied with the Health • Department's minimum requirements The Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry sa'd it seemed that they must comply with these requirements. He had seer. Dr Davis and Dr Ritchie some time ago and they were both insistent that the dump should be controlled in that manner. A councillor said that from the re.: port of a recent meeting of the han_ bour board it seemed that they were putting sfeme blame on the council. The two bodies always worked in harmony in the past.. The Mayor said that the chairman of the harbour board had told him not to take any notice of the published remarks which were absolutely inaccurate and conveyed a wrong impression. Cr F. Prideaux said the main question was the tins which if not crushed would lead to subsidence as they decayed. He thought the least they could do wa,s to compjy with the harbour board's request. The Mayor said the whole matter had better be deferred until after the next works' committee meeting. (With reference to the allegation that the report in the ''Beacon'' of the Harbour Boards was inaccurate, wc are perfectly convinced that the account as published wp,s correct and if anything erred on the side of moderation.
