Mount Maunganui Water Supply Causes Concern

Need For Conservation

Emphasised

Question Of Further

Restrictions

(Tirnos Correspondenl)

The question of the water supply at Mount Maunganui lias been again discussed by the Mount Maunganui Borough. Council. It was stated that there was a slight improvement in the position. The council appointed Mr A. Bancroft to act as Water Inspector and has instructed him to take appropriate action where anyone is found not complying with the by-law regarding the use of hoses. The need for the conservation of the water supply was emphasised by the Fire Inspector in his report to the council. “More drastic restrictions will be necessary,” stated Superintendent G, Barney, “if the brigade is to maintain a responsible degree of efficiency.”

The inspector suggested that the use of hoses be prohibited entirely and that it might be advisable to shut off all mains except that leading to the reservoir between the hours of 11 p.m. and 4 a.m.. Discussing the recommendations made bv the fire inspector, the Mayor (Mr S. F. Newton) said that it might be necessary to enforce these recommendations in the near future if an improvement in the situation was not evidenced by voluntary saving. He though that the fact that an inspector was on the job would prevent some selfish residents from using their hoses excessively. Cr C. H. Clarke stated that the water situation would require careful watching and might necessitate a quick decision. He proposed that the Mayor should lie empowered to act on Ills own without calling a special meeting if urgency compelled immediate action. The council agreed to this and resolved that Mr Newton be given authority to impose anv further restrictions if he considered them necessary.
