DEPUTATION WAITS ON MINISTER FAVOURABLE CONSIDERATION PROMISED To support a petition asking for the enforcement cf more humane means of slaughtering livestock, 'a deputation, which was led by Mr Geoffrey Hcdson, chairman of the executive committee of ' the Combined Animal Welfare Organisations of Nov/ Zealand (who recently visited the.Tauranga district in the interests of the movement), met the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Cullen) recently. Introduced by Mr C. H. Chapman, M.P. for Wellington Central, the deputation represented the Justices of the Peace Association, the National Council of Women, the New Zealand Vegetarian Society, the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection, and the Co-opera-tive Women's Guild cf New Zealand. The members of the deputation asked that all animals slaughtered in New Zealand abattoirs and freezing works should be instantaneously killed or stunned by means of a mechanically operated instrument in good repair, and that this humane killing should be made compulsory. It was stated that a large number of people throughout New Zealand supported the petition. The Minister promised favourable consideration of the representations. I
